If you’re in the mood for food, they also run The Slice & Pint, a pizza spot right around the corner, which has a robust tap list in its own right. Firestone Walker is among the world’s best-known craft breweries, but they’ve been very intentional about opening up new locations. In fact, The Propagator – their Venice brewpub – is one of only two locations outside of their Central California mothership, and the only one in SoCal. They consider their Venice location to be an experimental brewhouse, meaning that in addition to their flagships – like Mind Haze and Union Jack – you can find a bunch of developmental brews you won’t find anywhere else.

They consistently have somewhere around five different NEIPAs on draft. Green Cheek’s hazies stand out because they’ve mastered the balancing act of bright juiciness with layered depth and complexity. They bring a similar balance to all of their beers, and are increasingly branching out with other new techniques, including foeder-aging and mixed-drink style beers – like, for example, a 12% ABV gin and tonic style seltzer.

Placentia’s The Bruery opened in 2008, making them something like OGs in the SoCal beer scene. They also operate Bruery Terreaux, a sibling brewery in Anaheim that exclusively makes farmhouse-style wilds and sours. Both taprooms also feature beers from their Offshoot label, where they specialize in more mainstream hoppy beers. Casa Agria – Spanish for “sour house” – opened up as a membership-only barrel-aged wild ale project operated out of a small warehouse in Oxnard back in 2015. Fast forward seven years, and they’ve not only expanded their sour program and membership club, but they’ve added a wide variety of clean beers, a bustling taproom, and a steady lineup of can releases.

It all started in October of 2000, when Rick moved into a new neighborhood and was walking his dog. On the walk Rick noticed a house with the garage door open, and it had carpet on the floor, a dart board, a sit down video game that looked like PacMan™, a TV playing the Gator game, and a refrigerator. From infants to elders, this park is excellent for the whole family. You can also utilize one of their pavilions for a lovely family BBQ. First opened in 2010, the goal of this 5-acre facility is to honor the history and culture of North Carolina’s greatest attraction. Covering 380 acres on the banks of Lake Wylie, this public garden has been in bloom since 1991. With outstanding theater performances and extraordinary educational programs, we can’t recommend this attraction enough. You won’t find a more professional and highly recognized theater troupe geared for children anywhere in the region.

Whether you walk through the paved trails, play volleyball, have a picnic, or just lay down on the grass, the park meets everyone’s needs. It is made up of Discovery Place Nature, Discovery Place Science, and Discovery Place Kids. The aim of these museums is to introduce kids to science and the natural world by providing educational activities, live animal displays, and interactive exhibits. The Science Museum is on Tryon St Charlotte, while the Nature Museum Sterling Road. Pack your bag and explore the beautiful outdoors at Reedy Creek Park, Nature Center, & Preserve in Charlotte, NC.

Not surprisingly, the passes usually only include the larger coasters. As of this writing, only one Camp Snoopy ride offers the option, so consider Fast Lane only if you have thrill-seeking older kids. Keep in mind, however, that this activity is only geared to older kids. For the lower difficulty level of rafting, kids still have to be at least 8 years old to participate. From gliding through Uptown on a Segway to exploring ghostly tales on a walking tour, and enjoying the thrill of Carowinds, these activities offer a diverse range of experiences.

The ziplines require children to weigh at least 45 pounds (which most kids hit around ages 5 or 6) to make sure they are heavy enough to make it across the line. A helpful money saver is the 1 or 2-day CLT Pass that lets you pick and choose several Charlotte attractions at a discounted rate for as much as you can fit in during that time. Frankie’s Fun Park is the ultimate playground, offering everything from amusement rides to laser tag and go-karts.

If you’re a history buff like me who likes their lessons served with a side of fun, this is your gig. The thought-provoking exhibits are especially engaging for tweens and teens aged 10 and up. It’s a great way to engage their critical thinking skills while having a blast, making it one of the most kid friendly things to do in Charlotte. For those looking for more structured fun, the Greenway offers kayaking and mountain biking clinics. A tour of this fascinating historical site is suitable for children of all ages. Covering over 1,300 acres of protected land with access to Catawba River and Long Creek, this attraction is a haven for outdoorsy families.

Other particular areas of note in the trails are the McAlpine Creek and Campbell Creek Greenway (located Southeast of the city) as well as the beautiful Town of Matthews segment. I highly recommend finding a greenway close to wherever you live or are staying. We were shocked by how many animals got close enough for even our kids to feed from the backseat.

Octagon House Museum; tourist attraction in Watertown

the octagon house

The following are examples of the 'true' octagon houses and the range of design variations to be found. Estimates vary but hundreds of these Victorian-era homes are still standing across the United States and Canada. One estimate puts the number at 2,077.[3] Even in their heyday, octagon houses were never mainstream. Around that same time, The American Institute of Architects, which had been headquartered in New York City, began looking for a new national headquarters location in Washington, DC. In 1898,  AIA rented The Octagon, and the organization purchased the building in 1902.

Join a tour of this meticulously restored 1872 domed octagon house built to resemble an ancient Roman temple!

The video opens with water color painting of the Octagon house showing the front porch, the two-story building and the cupola on the roof. The eight-sided house is built of wood and painted a light blue with white trim. The water color shows the white picket fence surrounding the garden with green trees and a small blooming pink magnolia. The NSCDA and California State seals appear on the left and right of the watercolor.

With two secondary bedrooms and a fully-equipped primary bedroom, families of every size have space to thrive here. Smaller households should consider repurposing at least one bedroom to become a place for individual privacy, however. The most notable room downstairs is the kitchen, with two pantries attached for easy storage access. Navigating flights of stairs with food in hand can endanger the elderly, handicapped, or even just the clumsy.

A Brief History of Scent With Saskia Wilson-Brown

One day in July I was moaning to my most proactive friend about being bored. Minutes later she had booked tickets for a Sunday afternoon tour of the Armour-Stiner Octagon House in Irvington, N.Y., which she’d been eager to visit for years. The house was also living and working space for enslaved people, including Harry and Winney Jackson. Harry was the Tayloes’ head coachman, and Winney was Anne’s ladies maid. The Jacksons had three children, but only their son Henry ever worked with his parents at the Octagon. Their two daughters lived and worked at the Tayloes’ Mount Airy plantation in Virginia.

She lived to nurse all the Children of your GrandMother & died in The Octagon honored. Paul J. Armour likely got the idea for the shape of his home from the book A Home for All by noted phrenologist, sexologist, and amateur architect Orson Squire Fowler. Fowler extolls the merits of octagonal structures over traditional square or rectangular dwellings in his book. He argues that octagonal-shaped homes have more space, allow for a better arrangement of rooms, have more natural light, better ventilation, and can be more efficiently heated. Though some examples of octagonal structures were built in America before Fowler’s 1848 publication— most notably Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest Estate—the text set off a short-lived octagon house boom in the mid-19th century.

"The Lady in White" Interactive Tour & Performance

Lasted only 26 hours, but upon President Madison's return to the city, the White House was in no shape to live in. Though there were calls to move the capital from Washington, D.C., the Madisons refused. President Madison and Dolley Madison took up residence in The Octagon, one of Washington's first great houses, located close to the White House at the corner of 18th Street and New York Avenue. From The Octagon, the president ran his administration and the first lady ran Washington society. Although it is privately owned, this crown jewel of octagonal living is open to the public for a mere $29.

The Armour-Stiner Octagon House

The Crooked Lake Review believed that at least 2,000 residential octagon houses still existed as of 2005.However, the octagonal house trend did not only take off in America. Canada also adopted this architecture, though not with quite the same exuberance. We know of at least 20 octagon houses standing strong in Canada. Any house with an eight-sided plan qualifies as an octagon house. This style typically incorporates a flat roof along with a veranda that wraps around the home’s base.

For years, local rumors have swirled around The Octagon House, implying its connection to the spirit world. Come hear tales of the unexplained and uncanny events that have occurred in this magical house while experiencing the delight of this meticulously restored architectural wonder. If you were a forward-thinking individualist in 1800s America, building an eight-sided abode was a great way to show it.

Long before Pete Seeger sang, “Little boxes on the hillside, little boxes made of ticky tacky,” lamenting the eerie sameness of postwar development, architects and social progressives bemoaned that our houses looked alike. Americans were supposed to be innovators, and yet our homes drifted toward conformity, with designs that didn’t have much to do with how we lived. One such worrier was phrenologist, architect-tinkerer and proto-environmentalist Orson Squire Fowler. Those interested in The Octagon, the history of Washington, D.C., grassroots historic preservation, and the War of 1812 can access additional resources online. Here is a selection of websites that students and educators may find helpful. The Octagon MuseumThe American Institute of Architects Foundation owns and operates The Octagon Museum at the historic Octagon house. Visit this official website to plan a tour, sign up for Octagon news alerts, discover special events, and find out more about the American Institute of Architects.

His efforts proved ineffectual, and he was returning home, when he met my mother on the road, making her way to his place, Neabsco, near Dumfries, in Virginia. Serrurier, the French Minister, to occupy it, with a view to its protection. After going to Virginia, my parents divided their time between Neabsco and Mount Airy, until they reoccupied their own house, on its being vacated by Mr. Madison, after the war. For the nonce, until another house could be prepared for him, Mr. Madison was the occupant of The Octagon, and there he signed the treaty of peace with Great Britain, in the circular room over the entrance-hall, in February, 1815. Am (an) Account of The OctagonWritten by my father at my request 1870H.A Tayloe of Mt. AiryMy dear HarryThe Octagon was built by your Grand Father in the administration of President Washington who took much interest & frequently walked to examine its progress.

Inhabiting a complete aesthetic vision is one of the pleasures of encountering any successful work of art, and the feeling is enhanced when that art is something you can physically occupy. It was a twinkling sunlit day when my friend and I approached the house from its pink-tinted concrete walkway. Ten other visitors had reserved spots on the tour and the group was barely able to stifle the merriment that attends any chance, paid or not, to invade a stranger’s residence. Fowler's The Octagon House is sometimes incorrectly referred to as a pattern book but the popularity of the book lies in the way Fowler suggested some general principles, and encouraged readers to invent the details for themselves.

The construction materials, such as bricks, timber, iron, and Aquia Creek sandstone were all manufactured locally. In September 1814, after British forces burnt the White House during the War of 1812, for six months the Octagon House served as the residence of United States president James Madison and first lady Dolley Madison. It is one of only five houses to serve as the presidential residence in the history of the United States of America, and one of only three, along with the White House and Blair House, that still stand.

Today, the octagon is safe, with its first-floor porch restored to celebrate the Cultural Heritage Foundation’s 40th anniversary. This lesson is based on the National Historic Landmark registration form, “The Octagon (Colonel John Tayloe House)” (with photographs), and materials from The Octagon Museum Archives. It was written by Adam Auerbach, American Institute of Architects Foundation intern at The Octagon Museum, and edited by Teaching with Historic Places staff in consultation with Katherine Somerville, the Director of Programs at The Octagon. This lesson is one in a series that brings the important stories of historic places into classrooms across the country. Built in 1861, the Octagon House is a San Francisco historical landmark, an architectural treasure and a Colonial and Federal Periods Decorative Arts Museum.

Thus, octagonal homes are believed to bring good luck to their owners. Remember how we said that not every octagon house needs multiple levels? This model proves it by fitting everything you need into one floor. If you find yourself lacking any use for these spaces, you can cut them out entirely. On the other hand, you could repurpose them, turning them into offices, studies, or studios depending on your passions. A good house isn’t a weed that opportunistically grows on an available lot.

Despite its predetermined shape, Octagon Houses can serve various functions depending on a family’s needs. Each of these three examples depicts how an octagon house could perfectly suit your specific interests. No home of any other shape could lessen utility costs like an octagon house.

How many octagonal houses are there?

The lot was in open country west of the partly built President's House, about 1 mi. John Tayloe III was born at Mount Airy, which he later inherited. The colonial estate was built by his father, John Tayloe II, on the north bank of the Rappahannock River across from Tappahannock, Virginia. By this time, it was the centerpiece of a roughly 60,000 acre department of interdependent plantation farms known as the Mount Airy department, located approximately one hundred miles south of Washington, D.C., in Richmond County, Virginia. He was educated at Eton College and Cambridge University in England, served in the Virginia state legislature, and ran unsuccessfully for Congress in 1800. Regardless of your preferences, the octagon house can suit your style.

In 1898, the American Institute of Architects (AIA) selected the Octagon to be their new national headquarters. They rented the building for 4 years, and then purchased it outright in 1902. The Octagon would continue to serve as AIA's headquarters until the construction of the current headquarters building in the 1960s. While we cannot accurately count the number of modern octagonal houses in existence, we do have historical records. The United States National Register of Historic Places accounts for 68 octagonal houses still standing today.

There are many variations of ghost stories that feature the Octagon House in Washington, D.C. As one of the oldest buildings in the city, it lends itself nicely as a setting for historical, spooky, and macabre tales. The stories recorded here are merely a presentation of a few of the reported experiences and legends that have evolved over the past 200 years, and should not be taken as historical fact. The museum is currently owned and operated by the Architects Foundation and is open to the public Friday and Saturday 11am-4pm. The space hosts various public programs, educational tours, rotating exhibits, and special events.

Has any man in history loved anything as much as Orson Squire Fowler loved the octagon? Fowler, born in Cohocton, N.Y., in 1809, published a book in 1848 arguing that all houses should be eight-sided. He influenced a (failed) utopian community in Kansas called Octagon City, delivered an estimated 350 public orations on octagon supremacy and built himself a 60-room octagonal palace in upstate New York. The Tayloe family lived in the house until Anne’s death in 1855. By that time, the neighborhood around the house had changed significantly as factories and breweries filled the Foggy Bottom waterfront. After Anne’s death, her sons rented the house, first to a Catholic girls’ school, and later to the federal government for office space.

Students may want to review the readings for use in their discussion. This lesson is part of the National Park Service’s Teaching with Historic Places (TwHP) program. In late afternoon on August 24, 1814, the First Lady Dolley Madison frantically worked to save the White House’s treasures. With very little time left as the British Army marched in to sack the new capital, she managed to escape with precious works of American art before the enemy arrived to burn down the White House.

The building was designed by the first architect of the United States Capitol, William Thornton, and served for six months as the White House after the 1814 Burning of Washington. John Tayloe III married Ann Ogle, daughter of Benjamin Ogle and granddaughter to Samuel Ogle of Ogle Hall Annapolis, Maryland, in 1792 at her family's country home Belair Mansion. The Octagon property originally included a number of outbuildings, including a smokehouse, laundry, stables, carriage house, slave quarters, and an ice house (the only surviving outbuilding).

The Octagon is open to the public as a house museum, and serves as a venue for exhibits and events that educate and inspire the public on the value architects and architecture bring to culture and community. Since its construction began in 1799, The Octagon has symbolized power and national influence in Washington, DC. The Octagon was the private winter residence for the wealthiest plantation family in Virginia, who built in the newly-established capital to entertain national and international politicians. In the 1970s AIA constructed its current headquarters on the site of The Octagon’s original outbuildings, and today AIA serves more than 95,000 members. In the 1970s, The Octagon was first opened to the public as a museum.

These houses allow for creative interior layouts that prioritize efficient space usage. Visitors will also experience the house’s wrap-around veranda that offers 360-degree views of the lush landscape, as well as particular architectural details which relate specifically to native plants and foliage of the grounds. Finally, the tour will continue inside the house with an interior tour of the first, second and third floors, which retain their magnificent ornamentation and furnishings. This one hour tour introduces you to the history of the house and its occupants as well as the landscape of the property.

Management believes this Non-GAAP measure is important for use in evaluating the Company’s financial performance as it measures our ability to efficiently generate cash from our business operations relative to earnings. It should be considered in addition to, rather than as a substitute for, net income (loss) as a measure of our performance or net cash provided by operating activities as a measure of our liquidity. Namesakes Rains and Merced, granddaughter of the prominent landowner Don Antonio Maria Lugo, built the home to withstand the hot Inland Southern California climate, and of course to entertain. The home featured multiple large rooms and guest quarters as well as an open flume that carried water from springs through the kitchen and into the patio under the house to the orchard, providing water to the plants and cooling the home.
